TWO WORDS: User Forum,
January 19, 2012 Never a good sign that you're signed up in the user forum day one. Support responds via email fairly promptly, but it is worthless for real issues
More to come
PROS:
-Amazon lists the hard drive at 160GB, but it comes with a 500GB drive instead (Blast model only)
-Picture quality is pretty good
-TV Out and remote allows you to watch your recorded content right from the player
-------DVR
-Transfer of videos works pretty well as long as you selected the proper format when you setup the recording. (Not an issue for PCs, just mobile devices)
-Recording on the fly works pretty well
-Multiple Connections: You can connect more than one client to the box at a time, which is a major plus over the Slingboxes
-Has wifi built in
-Connections: Comes with 2 sets of RCA cables and 2 sets of component cables + and HDMI out cable.
CONS:
------Setup is a little more complicated than the Slingbox
------Streaming:
-Set the maximum bit rate does not work, the Vulkano will stream with all the available bandwidth needed to stream. In other words one cannot set the player to stream 500kbs.
-Min connection for LAN access is 700kbs according to the player, but it is really a non issue as the player/device with always stream at a much higher rate (put several emails into support, but to know avail, other than it appears to be a problem that has been going on for more than a year). Go to google and search for "Vulkano Blast: Max Video Rate Not Working" to see correspondence with helpless support.
-No audio only
-Lack of streaming configuration, you can choose a resolution and max bit rate, but the max bit rate function does not work. Slingbox wins this hands down because in Slingbox you can change the connection speed, frame rate, do audio only, and have a much larger selection of resolutions. This is extremely important when running off of your wireless data plan. On the Slingbox you can set your max speed to 256 if you weren't super concerned about the quality say watching the news cast, but on the Vulkano, you can't do that, it will use well over 1Mb for streaming on Android and Apple smart phones, and eat up your data usage
------DVR Function
-You are supposed to be able to record by series, but that option does not appear to be available (so that means recording shows one at time) The following is taken verbatim from Vulkano's website
""""Electronic Programming Guide
Access current and future TV program information directly from your PC. Schedule single TV show recordings or entire series to record directly to Vulkano's storage. Playback recordings on your mobile phone or in near HD quality on your big screen TV."""""
-Transfer of recorded programs to mobile devices. Recordings are device specific. You can't record in IPOD/IPAD format and view on Android and vice versa, even though Android devices can read MP4 video format ------major downer
-EPG (Electronic Program Guide) Not very good, only gives partial descriptions of the programs (can't tell you if is a new episode or when the original airing, the EPG with Windows Media Center is much much better)
-No integration with Windows Media Center (major bummer because the old Monsoon streaming devices could act as virtual tuner)
-No HDMI IN
-No Coax cable in or out
----Connectivity
-No web interface
-Has both WIFI and Ethernet, but have to be careful when connecting via PC client and running setup because it will automatically try and configure the Vulkano to use WIFI resulting in the Vulkano having two connections which causes problems with external streaming.
-TV interface is a little clunky
OVERALL
I found the setup harder than it needed to be and that comes from someone with several years experience with home routers and using port forwarding.
If you have a need for DVR and don't mind the lack of configuration options available, then the Vulkano will probably work for you.
If you are concerned about mobile bandwidth usage and don't need a DVR, then the Slingbox is probably more your speed, it's easier to setup and offers more configurations.
For the value, the Vulkano is a better deal, especially if don't need the DVR function, you can get the Vulkano Flow for around $100, about ½ what you would pay for a Slingbox, plus you get the added benefit of having wifi built if in you need that.
The verdict is still out on this device/software. What would make me give this 5 stars would be if the fixed the following:
1. Allow for finer control over the connection options
2. Allow mobile devices that can play multiple format types the ability to transfer them to the device (as it is now you just see an X where a checkbox should be)
3. Enhance the EPG/DVR where you get more information and program
4. Ability to record a program series
